Arsenal’s summer has taken a glamorous turn, with reports suggesting the Premier League champions are exploring whether a move for Vinicius Jr could become possible if his Real Madrid contract talks fail.
The Brazil forward, 26, is entering the final year of his deal at the Bernabeu, and negotiations over an extension have not yet produced a breakthrough. That has opened the door to speculation around a player Real Madrid still want to keep.
Arsenal’s interest is described as real but early. There have been no club-to-club talks, and reports suggest any move would depend on cost, wages and whether Vinicius reaches the point of considering an exit.
The numbers are the first obstacle. Vinicius is believed to earn around €15m to €17m net per year in Spain, a salary level that would require Arsenal to pay far more in gross wages in the UK. That would put him above the club’s current top earners.
Real Madrid’s pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has added fuel to the story, but reports suggest the Spanish club do not view that deal as a replacement plan for Vinicius. Diomande can also play from the right, giving Madrid another option rather than forcing out their Brazilian star.
The pressure is now on Real and Vinicius’ representatives, with further talks expected this week. Club president Florentino Perez is said to be personally involved, while new manager Jose Mourinho also wants the winger to stay.
For Arsenal fans, the idea is intoxicating. For now, the move sits in transfer-watch territory: possible enough to talk about, but still waiting for the contract talks in Madrid to break one way or the other.
