Although the New York Knicks hold a 2-1 lead over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, the race for the Finals MVP award remains wide open.
For now, Karl-Anthony Towns sits atop the list of candidates for the prestigious honor, but his position is far from secure. The next game could significantly alter the picture, especially if the Spurs manage to level the series.
Towns is averaging 16.7 points, 11 rebounds and three assists per game in the Finals. The Knicks’ big man played a key role in his team’s victories in the opening two contests and continues to pose a major challenge for San Antonio’s defense.
The biggest threat to his place atop the MVP rankings is Victor Wembanyama. The French star delivered an outstanding performance in Game 3, scoring 32 points and helping the Spurs climb back into championship contention. His Finals averages are equally impressive, with 29 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game.
“I’m sure Victor has numerous sources of motivation. Nobody is surprised by his strong performance or the aggressive approach he brought to the game,” Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said.
Jalen Brunson also remains firmly in the MVP conversation. The Knicks guard is the team’s leading scorer in the Finals, averaging 27.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists. While he has not been consistently efficient throughout the series, Brunson delivered the decisive baskets in both of New York’s victories.
OG Anunoby has also emerged as an important contributor. He is averaging 20.7 points per game while shooting better than 54 percent from the field. In addition to his offensive production, Anunoby has taken on significant defensive responsibilities, often being tasked with guarding Wembanyama.
Another player gaining attention is 21-year-old Spurs guard Stephon Castle. Castle shined in Game 3 with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists, becoming one of the youngest players in NBA Finals history to record at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists in a game. Before him, only Magic Johnson and Tony Parker had achieved that milestone at a younger age.
As the Finals enter a decisive stage, the race for the MVP award remains highly competitive. If the Knicks maintain control of the series, Towns could strengthen his position as the frontrunner. However, another Spurs victory coupled with another dominant performance from Wembanyama could completely reshape the hierarchy in the battle for the NBA Finals’ most prestigious individual honor.
