Jack White and Olivia Jean’s headline-making concert wedding has taken a legal turn, with Jean filing for divorce and asking the court for financial support.
According to court documents, Jean filed on June 3 and listed that same date as the couple’s separation date. The singer-songwriter cited “inappropriate marital conduct” in the complaint, a legal claim that has not been publicly answered by White in the source material.
“Wife would show that Husband is guilty of inappropriate marital conduct, which makes further cohabitation unsafe and improper,” the filing says.
Jean also says in the documents that she is financially dependent on White. She is asking for support, legal fees, expenses tied to the divorce case and for White to keep her listed as a beneficiary on his life insurance policy.
The filing adds another chapter to a relationship that became part of rock lore in 2022, when White proposed and married Jean onstage during a Detroit show. The moment unfolded during a performance of the White Stripes song “Hotel Yorba,” with White asking the crowd, “It’s been such a great day, mind if we get married right now?”
The complaint lists the “date and place of marriage” as December 2022 in Nashville, despite the public ceremony taking place months earlier in Detroit. At the time, a representative for White said “the marriage is legal and valid.”
White was previously married to Meg White, his former White Stripes bandmate, and later to model and musician Karen Elson, with whom he shares two children. Jean, frontwoman of the Black Belles, met White after a Dead Weather concert in 2009, after leaving demo CDs around the venue and tour bus.
