Ryan Gosling is trading Ken-energy for hellfire after Marvel used its San Diego Comic-Con Hall H stage to announce him as the new Ghost Rider.
The actor will play Johnny Blaze in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot, with Shawn Levy set to direct. The film is planned for release sometime in 2028.
Levy, who recently worked with Gosling on Starfighter, told the Comic-Con crowd that the role came together after conversations with the actor about the character. He added that after making Starfighter together, Gosling began talking about Ghost Rider and the answer became pretty simple: “Bro let’s ride.”
For Marvel fans, it is a casting that already feels engineered for the group chat. Gosling has spent years moving between prestige drama, offbeat comedy and full blockbuster mode, from Drive to Barbie. Now he is stepping into one of Marvel’s strangest, most visually loaded antihero roles.
The character has already had two notable screen lives. Nicolas Cage played Ghost Rider in Sony’s film version, while Gabriel Luna later appeared as Robbie Reyes on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
There is also a fun Hollywood full-circle moment sitting at home. Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, starred in the original Ghost Rider film alongside Cage, which means the household may already have some experience with flaming motorcycles, demonic deals and leather jackets.
Marvel did not announce further casting during the reveal. For now, Gosling has the bike, Levy has the keys, and 2028 has a new comic-book curiosity on the calendar.
