Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen speaks candidly about the most turbulent periods of his life in his new documentary series aka Charlie Sheen, revealing details about addiction, health struggles, and personal challenges that defined his career.
In an interview promoting the documentary, Sheen said he would not be able to have such conversations today if he were not sober, emphasizing that sobriety has given him the clarity to reflect on his past.
The documentary series, directed by Andrew Renzi, is split into two parts and follows Sheen’s life journey—from his childhood in Malibu and rise to Hollywood fame, through multiple scandals, addiction issues, and stints in rehabilitation, to the moment he was diagnosed as HIV-positive.
The director noted that extensive archival material, including Super 8 home videos from Sheen’s childhood, was used in the project, but said that Sheen’s remarkable memory of events was one of the most surprising aspects of the production.
Sheen revealed that he had previously turned down similar projects because he did not want a documentary focused solely on tabloid stories. According to him, this production offers a more balanced portrayal of his life, highlighting both his successes and struggles.
Alongside the documentary’s release, Sheen also published his autobiography The Book of Sheen: A Memoir, which further explores the most controversial moments of his career and personal life.
Although his father, legendary actor Martin Sheen, and brother Emilio Estevez did not participate in the documentary, Charlie Sheen said both watched an early cut of the project. He noted that Martin Sheen felt the archival footage was sufficient to tell the story and preferred not to appear in the series.
