Rebel Wilson has been cleared by a Sydney court of defaming Australian actress Charlotte MacInnes over a series of Instagram posts linked to Wilson’s film The Deb.
MacInnes, who starred in Wilson’s directorial debut, sued the Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect actress over Instagram posts published between 2024 and 2025. The dispute centred on Wilson’s claim that MacInnes had changed her account of an alleged incident involving a producer on the film.
MacInnes denied that she had retracted a sexual harassment complaint to advance her career and argued that Wilson’s posts damaged her reputation.
Justice Elizabeth Raper dismissed the case on Wednesday, finding that the posts were not defamatory and that MacInnes had not shown they caused serious harm to her reputation.
“I do not accept that the meaning conveyed was inherently serious or of a defamatory nature,” Raper wrote in her judgment, according to Reuters.
MacInnes’ legal team told Reuters it plans to appeal the decision.
Wilson thanked supporters after the verdict, saying she was grateful the chapter had reached its conclusion and looked forward to returning to her family and work.
