Hungarian prosecutors conducted an unannounced raid on the server center hosting former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s opposition Fidesz party on Tuesday, seizing communications infrastructure and databases as part of an expanding corruption probe. The raid marks a dramatic escalation in efforts by Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s administration to dismantle remaining strongholds of Orbán’s 16-year rule following his defeat in April’s elections.

The Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the action is tied to an ongoing criminal investigation into embezzlement and financial offenses involving the National Cultural Fund. In a statement posted to Facebook, Fidesz leadership condemned the operation as a political attempt to “legally disable” the opposition, claiming there is “no precedent for this in Hungary since the end of communism in 1990.”

Magyar, whose pro-European Tisza party won a sweeping two-thirds parliamentary majority on promises of anti-corruption reform and asset recovery, stated he learned of the raid directly from Fidesz’s public statement and is awaiting further details from law enforcement. The raid follows a series of swift constitutional and legal overhauls implemented by Magyar’s government aimed at stripping Orbán-era appointees of power across state institutions and foundations.
