Facebook is getting a new verification badge, but this one is not pitched as a creator perk or a paid status symbol.

Meta said on July 24 that it is launching Facebook Verified, a free badge for eligible users that confirms there is a real person behind a Facebook profile. The company said the feature uses a short selfie video checked against a user’s existing profile photos.

“As AI makes it easier to generate content, profiles, and messages, we want to provide a way for you to know there is a real person on the other side of a profile,” Meta said.

The rollout starts in select markets and will expand globally in phases, Meta said. Users must be 18 or older, in good standing with Facebook’s Community Standards, and show no evidence of inauthentic behavior. The company said the badge is not available for Pages or ProMode accounts.

Once approved, the badge will appear first in Marketplace, Dating, Groups and on a user’s profile. Meta said badges will later be added to Feed posts as well.

The detail that will matter most to everyday users: there is no subscription fee. Meta said users verify once, and the badge then travels with them across Facebook.

But the company also put a limit on what the blue signal means. Meta said the badge shows that a profile belongs to a real person who completed selfie verification and met trust and safety requirements. It does not mean Facebook endorses that user or guarantees they are trustworthy.

For anyone buying a secondhand couch, checking out a dating match or stepping into a heated Group thread, the badge is meant to answer one basic question before the conversation starts: is there a real person on the other side?
