One of the greatest tennis players of all time, Serena Williams, is officially returning to professional tennis. The American legend will compete next week at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London, marking her first appearance after nearly four years away from the sport.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion confirmed her comeback last week after rejoining the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) anti-doping testing program, a mandatory requirement for players wishing to return to competition.
Although Williams firmly denied plans of a comeback in December, she surprised the sports world with an official announcement made in partnership with Nike and the tournament organizers.
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter. Grass courts have given me some of the most memorable moments of my career, and I’m excited to compete again on one of tennis’ most iconic stages,” Williams said.
The 44-year-old will compete only in the doubles event, where she will partner with rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko. Their first-round opponents will be Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe.
Mboko did not hide her excitement about the opportunity to play alongside her longtime idol.
“It is a huge honor to share the court with one of the greatest athletes of all time. Tennis truly is something special,” the 19-year-old Canadian wrote on social media.
While many have questioned whether Williams is ready for a return to competition, recent training sessions suggest that the legendary player has not lost the qualities that made her one of the most dominant athletes in tennis history. Videos from her practice sessions in London generated significant attention, while those who have trained with her insist that she remains in excellent physical condition.
Williams herself admitted that her perspective on tennis has changed.
“I don’t have anything to prove. I’ve achieved more than most people could ever dream of. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” she said.
The American also explained that she wants to enjoy the atmosphere of professional tournaments again and give her children the opportunity to watch her compete.
When Williams stepped away from professional tennis in 2022, she never officially used the word “retirement,” leaving open the possibility of a future return. Now, nearly four years later, one of the most recognizable figures in global sport is preparing to step back onto the court.
Whether this will be a short-term comeback or the beginning of a new chapter in her remarkable career remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Serena Williams’ return has once again placed the tennis world firmly in the spotlight.
