Wimbledon just added a serious nostalgia hit to its draw: Serena and Venus Williams are set to team up in doubles at SW19 after receiving a wildcard, according to ESPN and BBC Sport.

The sisters have not played doubles together since the 2022 US Open, where they exited in the opening round, ESPN reported. Their return gives Wimbledon another headline act before the tournament has even started.

BBC Sport also reported that the Williams sisters were among the Wimbledon doubles wildcard selections, while ESPN said they “headline” the list of wild cards announced for the grass-court Grand Slam.

The move lands during a busy and slightly chaotic grass season. ESPN reported that Serena recently played doubles at the Berlin Open, while BBC Sport has been tracking a packed British build-up to Wimbledon, including Arthur Fery reaching the Queen’s quarter-finals with what was described as the “best result of career.”

There has also been disruption around the draw. ESPN reported that Lorenzo Musetti has withdrawn from Wimbledon with an injury, while BBC Sport said Dan Evans missed out on a Wimbledon singles wildcard and Cameron Norrie was beaten at Queen’s on his injury return.

For Wimbledon, the Williams wildcard changes the energy around the doubles competition. Doubles often fights for attention during Grand Slam fortnights, but this pairing brings instant global interest, casual fans, tennis diehards and a heavy dose of Centre Court curiosity.

The result changes the picture for a tournament already loaded with storylines. Emma Raducanu is heading toward Wimbledon after losing the Queen’s final to Donna Vekic, according to BBC Sport, while ESPN has also tracked rising names and injury questions across the field.

For Serena and Venus, this is not being framed by the available reporting as a full singles comeback. It is a doubles wildcard, and that distinction matters. But the sports world is watching what happens next, because whenever the Williams sisters share a court, Wimbledon becomes louder.
