Russian missile and artillery strikes killed at least five people and injured 24 others across southeastern and northeastern Ukraine on Sunday, local officials reported. The fatal bombardments targeted residential areas and evacuation routes, marking a continuation of intense aerial warfare as both nations trade heavy cross-border strikes.

In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, Russian strikes killed two civilians and injured 16 others. Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed that the attacks reduced parts of a residential neighborhood to rubble and left multiple buildings ablaze. Simultaneously, in the northeastern Kharkiv region, a Russian missile strike on the town of Zmiiv killed one person and wounded eight, including two children. Further north in the region, a Ukrainian police officer was killed while attempting to coordinate civilian evacuations from a frontline community.

Ukraine said it struck two Russian oil refineries overnight as Kyiv intensifies its drone campaign against Moscow’s energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian long-range drones hit the Slavyansk and Yaroslavl refineries, located roughly 300 and 700 kilometres from the front line, respectively.

Both Moscow and Kyiv continue to deny deliberately targeting civilians.
