South Korea is accelerating its push to replace human workers with robots across cafes, shipyards, hospitals and care homes, as a collapse in the country’s birth rate to 0.65 per woman leaves businesses with no other way to stay staffed.

Unstaffed coffee shops, ramen restaurants and flower outlets are spreading across Seoul and other cities, with robot arms serving drinks around the clock at zero labour cost. Kim Dongjin, chief executive of robotic coffee chain Lounge X, said the population of baristas in their early twenties is drastically declining and that his company’s eight fully automated 24-hour cafes are a direct response. Samsung Card data shows the number of fully unmanned stores quadrupled between 2020 and 2025.

The labour crunch is equally severe in heavy industry. South Korean shipyards hold a 135 trillion won order backlog through 2028 but face a projected shortfall of 40,000 skilled workers. HD Hyundai has partnered with Persona AI to deploy humanoid welding robots on its production lines as a direct substitute.

South Korea already leads the world in robot density at 1,012 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers, twice the level of second-placed Singapore. The government’s Fourth Intelligent Robot Basic Plan commits $2.4 billion in public and private investment through 2030, targeting manufacturing, healthcare and elder care. In May 2026 Seoul began rolling out AI and care robots across six nursing facilities under a digital transformation programme aimed directly at the caregiver shortage.
