Tech giant Meta announced a monumental $9.1 Billion investment to construct a massive artificial intelligence data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta. This project marks Meta’s first large-scale build in Canada and its largest infrastructure hub outside the United States. The 1-gigawatt facility, which can scale up to 1.8 gigawatts, will serve as the tech giant’s 33rd data center globally as it races to expand computing capacity for next-generation AI models.

To meet the immense electricity demands without straining the local public grid, the Meta AI data center investment includes fully funding its own localized energy infrastructure. Meta has secured a long-term tolling agreement with Pembina Pipeline to draw power from a newly approved natural gas-fired plant slated for 2030. To address environmental anxieties regarding resource depletion, Meta will employ an advanced closed-loop liquid cooling system to limit regional water consumption. While Alberta officials celebrated the historic private sector injection as a massive validation of the province’s tech-friendly regulatory climate, the reliance on fossil fuels has drawn immediate criticism from environmental groups, underscoring the deep tension between rapid AI scaling and global clean energy targets.
