US Vice President JD Vance announced on Sunday that his wife Usha Vance, 40, gave birth to their fourth child, a boy named Alec Neel Vance, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, making Usha the first second lady to give birth while in office since the 1870s.
Vance announced the news on X, writing that Usha and the baby are happy and healthy and that their kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother. Alec joins siblings Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 5. The couple announced the pregnancy on January 20, 2026, exactly one year after Vance was sworn in as vice president, at which time they also revealed the baby was due in late July.
JD Vance, 41, an Ohio native, and Usha, the daughter of Indian immigrants, met while attending Yale Law School, graduating together in 2013. Earlier this year, while promoting his book, Vance said it was unlikely he would take parental leave following the birth, adding he had to persuade Usha to have another child.
The birth comes as Vance is playing a central role in the Trump administration’s Iran war strategy, having led the US delegation in Switzerland and Doha talks and delivered key ceasefire messaging to Gulf allies.
