US President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States on September 24, with artificial intelligence expected to be the central topic of discussion at what will be the first Chinese state visit to Washington since 2015.
“President Xi is coming over on September 24th, and we talked about it when I was over in Beijing, and we’ll be talking about it again,” Trump said, referring to AI discussions held during his May state visit to China. Trump called AI the biggest thing anybody has ever seen and said whoever wins the race to dominate it will probably win everything.
The visit follows Wednesday’s meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila, where both sides discussed laying the groundwork for what Rubio described as a very positive visit. The September 24 date coincides with the UN General Assembly in New York, where Xi would also be expected to speak.
The two leaders last met in Beijing on May 14 and 15, where Trump invited Xi to the White House.
