International chess grandmaster Judit Polgár has officially declined an offer from Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar to serve as the nation’s next president. The 49-year-old sports icon, widely regarded as the greatest female chess player in history, announced her decision on social media following a high-profile proposal by Magyar to nominate her for the largely ceremonial head-of-state position.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Polgár expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting that she appreciated the prime minister’s decision to seek an independent candidate above party politics. However, she ultimately turned down the role, stating that she did not “feel enough strength within me to take on the historic responsibility of uniting a divided nation”. Polgár added that she would continue to support a future independent president in their efforts to represent the country.
The offer had come after Magyar’s ruling Tisza party passed a constitutional amendment ending the mandate of former President Tamás Sulyok, an ally of ousted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Magyar floated Polgár’s name following an open letter signed by 16 prominent Hungarian public figures, including Rubik’s Cube inventor Ernő Rubik, encouraging her candidacy. Polgár’s refusal leaves the Tisza administration searching for a new presidential nominee to present to parliament as it continues its political restructuring.
