England’s World Cup quarter-final build-up has taken another sharp turn, with Thomas Tuchel saying the team still has no explanation for Jarell Quansah’s upgraded two-game suspension.
Quansah was sent off during England’s 3-2 win over Mexico after a VAR review judged his challenge on Jesus Gallardo worthy of a straight red card. The punishment was later extended to two matches after the challenge was classed as serious foul play.
Tuchel said England have not been told why the ban went beyond the usual one-match punishment for that type of dismissal. Asked whether his criticism of officials after the Mexico game might have played a part, Tuchel replied: “I don’t think so. We also have no explanation.”
The decision leaves England without Quansah for Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway in Miami. The pressure is now on Tuchel to reshape his defence for a knockout game that already had enough drama around it.
There was better news elsewhere in the squad. Tuchel confirmed Declan Rice, Marc Guehi and Reece James were all available after fitness concerns during the week.
“We had everyone available in training. That’s the best news,” Tuchel said. “We have the full choice except for our suspended player [Quansah].”
England reached the last eight after surviving much of the second half against Mexico with 10 men. Tuchel said the team had taken belief from that escape but warned it was only one step.
Norway arrive with Erling Haaland in form, while Harry Kane sits just behind him in the tournament scoring race. Kane said: “Obviously, I’m hoping he has a quiet day tomorrow.”
