EU Targets Migrant Smugglers With New Sanctions

The European Commission proposed a new sanctions framework on Thursday targeting migrant smuggling, human trafficking and organised crime networks, introducing asset freezes and travel bans on individuals and entities found responsible for facilitating illegal migration into the EU.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the goal was to drive smugglers out of business and save the lives of thousands of people who dream of a better life, adding that Europe must decide who comes and in what circumstances.

The framework would prohibit listed persons and entities from accessing EU financial systems, freeze their assets within the bloc and bar their entry into or transit through member states. The proposal requires unanimous approval by the European Council before it can be implemented.

The announcement follows a series of sweeping migration reforms passed in recent weeks. Last month the European Parliament approved an overhaul streamlining deportations and permitting offshore detention centres for asylum seekers. The new sanctions regime adds a criminal enforcement dimension, targeting the networks that profit from moving people illegally across EU borders.

Critics including Amnesty International warned the broader migration package risks trapping people in precarious situations and enabling rights violations at offshore detention hubs.
