An explosive overnight fire tore through a crowded pub and restaurant in northern Bangkok, killing at least 27 people and leaving dozens more injured. The horrific tragedy, which unfolded late Sunday night at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao beer hall in the city’s Chatuchak district, has once again exposed severe lapses in health and safety compliance within Thailand’s bustling nightlife sector.

The blaze ignited at approximately 11:57 p.m. local time on Sunday while an estimated 300 patrons were inside the single-storey venue. According to early survivor accounts, the incident began when smoke suddenly began billowing from an electrical circuit breaker near the front stage, followed by an immediate power outage and a massive explosion. The flames spread rapidly across highly flammable ceiling decorations, filling the air with toxic plastic smoke and triggering a blind panic among the trapped crowd.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt arrived at the scene early Monday morning to oversee emergency operations. Disaster management officials confirmed that of the 27 dead, 9 were men and 18 were women, with the vast majority succumbing to smoke inhalation. Firefighters noted that the rescue was severely hampered because tables, chairs, and beer crates were blocking the venue’s secondary fire exits, forcing terrified customers to flee toward the back restrooms where they were ultimately overwhelmed by the dense smoke. An additional 63 people have been hospitalized across 16 regional medical facilities, with 22 listed in critical condition.
