Instagram is testing how much creators will pay to be seen, and its newest answer starts at $3.99 a month.
The platform has launched Instagram Plus, an optional subscription that keeps the main app free but adds extra tools, including Story Spotlight, Story Extend, multiple Story Audiences and custom fonts. Story Spotlight pushes a subscriber’s story toward the front of followers’ story trays, while Story Extend keeps a story live for 48 hours instead of the usual 24.
For creators and small brands, that means Stories are getting a paid visibility lane. Chelsea Peitz, a personal branding strategist, said the plan looks most useful for personal brands that already have active communities in Stories, rather than every casual poster or business account.
The catch is simple: if lots of creators pay to jump the line, the line gets crowded again.
Instagram is also giving users more control over what the app recommends. A new Your Algorithm panel lets people view and change topic categories Instagram has assigned to their interests across Reels, Explore and the main feed. The feature does not apply to Stories, which are based on accounts people already follow.
Another new feature, Instants, pushes Instagram further into raw, disappearing photo-sharing. Users take a photo in the moment, post it without a retake option, and it disappears after being viewed. Instants also expire after 24 hours.
Meta is separately testing Reels series on Instagram and Facebook, allowing creators to organize videos into episode-style collections. That could turn scattered clips into bingeable playlists on a creator’s profile.
For now, the message to creators is clear: Instagram wants more formats, more surfaces and, for those willing to pay, a better shot at being tapped first.
