Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return to the Octagon ended in immediate disaster on Saturday night, collapsing just 69 seconds into the first round of his headline bout against Max Holloway at UFC 329. Fighting for the first time in exactly five years and a day, the 37-year-old Irishman’s heavily hyped comeback was cut short by a devastating knee injury, leaving a record-paying, sold-out crowd at T-Mobile Arena in a state of stunned disbelief.

The welterweight clash was thrown into immediate disarray on McGregor’s very first offensive sequence. The former two-division champion opened the bout by launching an aggressive flying roundhouse kick across the cage but landed awkwardly on his right leg. Although he attempted to push through the pain and throw two more strikes, McGregor’s leg visibly buckled, forcing referee Herb Dean to step in and halt the contest at the 1:09 mark before Holloway could even engage.

Following the anticlimactic stoppage, UFC President Dana White confirmed that early medical assessments point to a torn ACL, a catastrophic setback for the aging superstar who spent half a decade recovering from a severe leg fracture suffered in 2021. While Holloway expressed immense disappointment over the freak ending and immediately called for a trilogy fight to settle their long-standing rivalry, the cavernous silence inside the arena signaled a sobering reality for fans who may have witnessed the final chapter of the “Notorious” era.
