The intense monsoon weather dropped up to 161mm of water across the metropolitan region, paralyzing local transit networks. Widespread Mumbai heavy rains triggered sudden landslides along the major expressway linking the city to Pune, completely blocking vehicular traffic with heavy construction rubble and mud. Regional railway networks subsequently canceled long-distance train operations between the two hubs, while rough atmospheric conditions forced multiple flight diversions at the international airport.
Civic authorities confirmed that emergency rescue teams searched the collapsed structures where five young children and one adult woman died. Furthermore, falling trees have blocked multiple transit lanes, adding to the severe urban gridlock. While the national weather office predicts lighter showers for the region later on Monday, local officials advised residents to avoid non-essential travel until waterlogged roads are fully cleared.
