Europe is entering a new era of defense policy as governments across the continent dramatically increase military spending in response to growing security concerns and uncertainty about the future of transatlantic relations.

For decades, many European countries relied heavily on the United States as the primary guarantor of the continent’s security. Today, however, political shifts in Washington, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and growing concerns about Russia’s military ambitions are forcing European leaders to rethink that model.

Germany, Poland, the Baltic states, and several Nordic countries have announced major investments in defense modernization, including new fighter aircraft, missile systems, air defense networks, and ammunition production. Poland is now among NATO’s highest defense spenders as a percentage of GDP, while Germany continues to implement its historic military modernization program.

European officials increasingly argue that security can no longer be treated as a secondary budget priority. The challenge facing policymakers is balancing defense investments with domestic pressures including inflation, housing shortages, healthcare costs, and slowing economic growth.

The debate is likely to define European politics for years to come as governments attempt to prepare for an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.
