One person was killed and another critically injured in a shooting Sunday night at San Pedro Square in San Jose, California, a popular entertainment hub serving as a World Cup fan zone watch party venue. The San Jose Police Department confirmed that the incident, which occurred around 9:12 p.m. local time near the intersection of North Market and West Santa Clara streets, is being actively investigated as a homicide.

First responders pronounced one victim dead at the scene, while the second was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police quickly cordoned off the area and closed several surrounding streets. Authorities noted that no World Cup matches were actively being screened at the time of the gunfire, as the day’s tournament schedule had concluded hours earlier.

The identities of the victims have not been released, and police have not yet provided information regarding potential suspects or a motive. San Pedro Square is one of dozens of fan zones across the San Francisco Bay Area hosting large public watch parties.
