Humanoid robots traded punches, kicks and knockdowns in Shenzhen this week as China staged what organisers billed as the world’s first full-scale humanoid robot fighting competition.

The event, called Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend, or URKL, was held at the Shenzhen Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center and launched by local robotics company EngineAI. The tournament featured full-sized humanoid robots fighting in front of a live audience, with teams using EngineAI’s T800 robot as the standard competition platform.

One of the night’s most dramatic moments came when a white robot named “White Eagle” landed a high kick to the head of its black-clad opponent, “Matador,” drawing a loud reaction from the crowd.

In another bout, a robot’s head was knocked off during combat. Even after losing head-mounted sensing functions, it continued to throw punches and absorb strikes through its torso-based core systems, in what organisers described as a test of durability and impact resistance.

EngineAI says the T800 stands 1.73 meters tall and can perform advanced combat movements, including uppercuts, spinning kicks and rapid recovery after being knocked down. The company says the robot is equipped with posture control, dynamic perception and shock-absorbing systems designed for high-intensity movement.

The competition is not judged only on brute force. Organisers said robots are evaluated across four areas: effective strikes, body stability, defensive and evasive ability, and overall durability.

Action star Donnie Yen appeared at the event and said watching real robots fight up close felt different from seeing similar scenes in science fiction films.

EngineAI founder and CEO Zhao Tongyang said the goal is to turn the tournament into a global humanoid robot fighting brand while using live competition to accelerate research. He said combat scenarios could help test balance, fast decision-making and sensor coordination, moving humanoid robots closer to commercial use beyond laboratory prototypes.
