Russian military forces launched five guided aerial bombs at the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy overnight into Friday, July 17, striking multiple civilian infrastructure targets just hours after a prior bombardment.

According to Oleh Hryhorov, Head of the Sumy Oblast Military Administration, the consecutive strikes occurred less than six hours after a previous Russian aerial attack on the outskirts of the city. The targeted bombardments hit several urban sectors, including two high-impact strikes directly within Sumy’s central district.

The attacks resulted in severe structural damage, heavily impacting a multi-story, non-residential building and shattering hundreds of windows in surrounding residential properties. Emergency response teams and municipal services remain active at the blast sites to clear debris and assess the wreckage. Local authorities are still verifying the final casualty figures and the full financial scale of the property damage.

This latest overnight offensive follows a broader wave of regional hostility. On July 16, Russian strikes in the wider Sumy district injured seven civilians, including a four-year-old child, amid an intensified Russian air campaign targeting Ukrainian border regions.
