A 17-year-old girl died in northern France after falling from the back of a lorry during celebrations of France’s World Cup quarterfinal victory over Morocco.
Emergency responders tried to resuscitate the teenager, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. as crowds celebrated France’s win and the vehicle entered a roundabout.
Authorities said the girl fell from the truck and was crushed. Six minors were present when the accident happened, and one was taken to hospital in Maubeuge in a state of shock.
The truck driver was taken into police custody, and an investigation has been opened.
The tragedy comes as World Cup celebrations have also turned deadly or violent in other countries during the tournament. Four people died during mass celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico’s win over Ecuador, while disorder in London after France’s victory over Morocco left a police officer hospitalized.
