The latest flare-up came after Trump spoke to reporters about TikTok and used the moment to compare himself with Swift. He said, “You know who the number-one person in TikTok is, by far? Trump. Me.” He then added: “Taylor Swift was number 11.”
The comment landed after days of online attention around Swift and Travis Kelce, who were reported to have married on July 3. The White House had already joined the conversation with posts riffing on Swift-related imagery and language, drawing immediate pushback from fans who accused the administration of using the singer’s brand for attention.
But the TikTok claim gave the fandom a cleaner target. Swift’s account was listed with 33.5 million followers, while Trump’s account was listed with 16.7 million, undercutting any plain reading that he was the platform’s most-followed figure.
The reaction online was fast and predictably chaotic. Some users mocked Trump’s wording around the app. Others asked why the president was talking about a pop star during a press exchange. Several Swift fans framed the comment as another example of Swift being pulled into political culture wars without seeking the spotlight herself.
Swift has not publicly responded to the remark. Kelce has not addressed it either.
