A popular cultural street festival in Toronto erupted into chaos on Saturday evening when an exchange of gunfire left two men dead and at least four others seriously injured. The sudden violence triggered a massive emergency response, prompting local police to issue an urgent public warning of an active shooter as thousands of panicked festivalgoers fled the scene.
The shooting occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. local time near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where an estimated 13,000 people had gathered for the annual Salsa on St. Clair festival. Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo later clarified that the incident was not a random mass shooting, but rather an isolated exchange of gunfire between individuals deliberately targeting one another within the crowd. The gunshots sparked widespread panic, causing attendees to trample one another, shield children, and seek immediate cover inside local restaurants.
Emergency responders confirmed that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second man succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Although police have secured the three separate crime scenes and recovered two firearms, the suspects remain at large. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the shooting, branding it a “reckless, irresponsible act of violence.”
