UK households and businesses are being paid to cut electricity use as Britain’s grid operator looks for more ways to keep supply and demand in balance, Financial Times reported.

The payments are part of a wider push to use consumers as a flexible resource, rather than relying only on power stations, batteries and network equipment when the electricity system comes under pressure.

Britain’s energy system operator is turning to homes and companies to help manage the grid, the source material said, with customers rewarded for reducing demand at selected times.

The shift could affect how consumers experience the power market. Instead of only paying bills after using electricity, some users are being pulled into the market as participants who can be paid for changing when they use power.

For industry, the development adds pressure on suppliers, technology companies and large electricity users to make demand response easier to deliver. For governments, it puts a sharper focus on whether flexible use can lower system costs without making energy use more complicated for households.

The approach comes as electricity systems absorb more variable generation and changing demand from heating, transport and digital infrastructure. Markets are watching whether consumer flexibility can reduce the need for more expensive emergency balancing measures.

But not every consumer will be equally placed to benefit. Households with flexible routines, smart meters or controllable devices may find it easier to shift usage than people who cannot move demand away from busy periods.

The practical test is whether payments become a regular part of the electricity system or remain a limited tool for moments when the grid needs help.
