An overnight barrage of Ukrainian attack drones struck several residential areas across the Moscow region, killing at least three people and wounding five others. The multi-wave aerial assault, which forced multiple capital airports to temporarily suspend flight operations, marks one of the deadliest drone strikes on the Russian heartland since the war began.
According to Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov, all three fatalities occurred in the village of Pionersky, located within the Istra municipal district northwest of the capital. The casualties were reported after intercept debris and direct strikes slammed into a residential neighborhood, igniting severe fires that completely engulfed five private homes. Emergency crews worked through the early hours of Monday morning to contain the blazes and search for survivors beneath the rubble. Three additional residents in the Istra district were treated for varying degrees of shrapnel injuries and smoke inhalation.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that air defense units and electronic warfare systems successfully “shot down and suppressed” 81 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the wider Moscow region alone. However, several drones managed to penetrate the defensive screen. In the nearby city of Solnechnogorsk, an explosive drone directly struck a multi-story apartment building, wounding two civilians and blowing out windows across several floors. Minor structural damage was also reported in the villages of Babkino and Mozhaysk.
The massive scale of the incoming raid triggered immediate security protocols across Moscow’s transport infrastructure. Federal aviation authorities enacted emergency coordination procedures at Domodedovo Airport and imposed strict temporary flight restrictions at Zhukovsky International Airport, forcing dozens of commercial airliners into holding patterns or diverting them to alternative runways outside the oblast before normal operations resumed later on Monday morning.
