U.S. Representative Ro Khanna revealed on Saturday that he and his delegation were forcefully detained for over an hour by armed Israeli settlers during a fact-finding tour of the occupied West Bank. The high-profile progressive Democrat from California, who is actively weighing a 2028 presidential bid, scathingly criticized the encounter as a direct, first-hand look at the “toxic culture of oppression” and total impunity experienced daily by Palestinians living under occupation.
The confrontation unfolded on Wednesday while Khanna’s team was visiting Khirbet Zanuta, a southern West Bank Bedouin hamlet whose residents were forcibly displaced following repeated settler raids. According to Khanna and his aides, a group of masked settlers brandishing American-made M4 rifles surrounded their transport van, blocked the roadway, and aggressively refused to let the American delegation pass. When units from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) arrived on the scene, Khanna noted that instead of intervening to assist the Americans, the soldiers actively sided with the settlers, prolonging the standoff for roughly 90 minutes.
The delegation was ultimately permitted to proceed only after making urgent distress calls to the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem and the Israeli civil police, who eventually arrived to disperse the crowd. The IDF later issued a statement confirming that troops responded to reports of civilians blocking vehicles near the hamlet but denied taking part in the blockade. Reflecting on the intense 90-minute ordeal, Khanna stated that the experience has only deepened his resolve to consider a White House run, warning that Washington’s political establishment remains dangerously out of touch with how central Palestinian human rights have become to the next generation of American voters.
