Veteran Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a towering figure in American politics and a fiercely loyal ally to President Donald Trump, passed away Saturday evening following a brief and unexpected illness. He was 71 years old.

The shocking announcement came early Sunday morning from Graham’s congressional office, sending immediate ripples through Capitol Hill and the wider political landscape. “On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness,” the official statement read.

“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.” According to emergency dispatch logs, medical personnel were called to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence on Saturday night following reports of a patient experiencing severe chest pains, where responders performed CPR before transporting him to George Washington University Hospital.

First elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 and later to the Senate in 2002, Graham built a formidable reputation as an outspoken foreign policy hawk, consistently advocating for a muscular U.S. presence abroad and taking a notoriously hardline stance against adversaries like Iran.

Though he was once a stinging critic of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential primary, he famously transitioned into one of the president’s most steadfast defenders and trusted advisors, exercising substantial influence over judicial appointments and military strategy. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster paid tribute to Graham, calling him “the fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America,” and is expected to soon appoint an interim successor to fill the vacant Senate seat.
