Europe is attempting to reduce its dependence on American AI giants through a growing push for “AI sovereignty.”

At the first major summit hosted by French AI company Mistral, political leaders, investors and technology executives argued that Europe must build its own AI infrastructure, models and cloud ecosystem if it wants to remain competitive. Mistral’s leadership warned that Europe may have only a narrow window to establish a meaningful presence in the AI race before U.S. dominance becomes irreversible.

The debate reflects a growing geopolitical dimension of artificial intelligence, where control over models, chips and data centers is increasingly viewed as a strategic national asset.
