The U.S. space agency NASA has announced the official crew for the upcoming Artemis 3 mission, marking an important step in the new era of lunar exploration.
Four astronauts will take part in this key mission, which is scheduled for 2027. Its primary objective is to test the performance and safety of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft under real flight conditions with a human crew on board.
Among the selected astronauts is Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano, who will become the first representative of the European Space Agency to be directly chosen to participate in the Artemis lunar programme. His appointment is seen as a significant milestone in strengthening international cooperation in future space missions.
During the mission, the crew will spend several weeks in orbit, testing the spacecraft’s critical systems, safety procedures and the capabilities of equipment designed for long-duration missions. NASA says these checks are essential to ensuring safe conditions for future astronauts who will land on the surface of the Moon.
The agency stated that technical preparations and mission simulations are in their final stages. Artemis 3 is part of NASA’s broader programme aimed at establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon and preparing for future missions to Mars.
With this mission, NASA is opening a new chapter in space exploration, reaffirming its commitment to sending humans back into the vicinity of the Moon and laying the groundwork for long-term exploration activities beyond Earth.
