Instagram Reels are getting a bigger passport: Meta says its AI translation tool is expanding to five more languages, letting more creators dub short videos for audiences who do not speak the original language.
Meta updated its Reels translation announcement on Tuesday, July 14, saying, “We’re expanding AI-powered translations for Reels to French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Korean on Instagram.”
The company said the new additions build on support already available for English, Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada. The feature uses Meta AI to translate and dub Reels, and can also match the translated audio to a creator’s mouth movements when lip syncing is enabled.
For creators, the pitch is simple: one clip can travel further without being remade for every market. Meta says translations are free and available to all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is available. On Facebook, access is available to creators with at least 1,000 followers.
Meta says translated videos are labeled as “Translated with Meta AI,” giving viewers a heads-up when they are watching dubbed content rather than the original audio. Users can also turn translations off or choose to watch clips in their original language through the audio and language settings menu.
The update lands as social platforms keep chasing short-form video growth across borders. For Reels creators, the next viral audience may now be listening in French, German, Italian, Japanese or Korean.
