Threads is giving its Live Chats feature a bigger push, adding translations, co-hosts and new moderation controls as Meta’s X rival tries to make live conversation feel less chaotic and more global.
The company announced the update on Tuesday, saying chats will now support translations so users in different countries can follow conversations more easily. Threads is also opening the ability to start Live Chats to all “Community Champions,” a group it describes as highly followed users who post often in their communities and keep discussions active.
Hosts are getting more control too. They can now invite up to three co-hosts into a Live Chat, which Threads says is meant to help manage the room or bring in another voice. Hosts can also delete messages for everyone, and the platform is testing a visual treatment that would make host messages stand out more clearly inside chats.
The update comes after Threads first rolled out Live Chats as a way to make the app feel more immediate. Threads said hundreds of chats have been hosted almost daily since launch, with thousands of users joining.
Live Chats allow users to send messages, photos, videos, links and emoji reactions. Up to 150 people can actively send messages in a chat. Once that cap is reached, others can still watch, react and take part in polls in spectator mode.
Threads also said desktop support is coming soon and pinned messages are being developed, two additions creators have asked for. The app reached 500 million monthly active users earlier this month, nearly three years after launching as a direct challenge to X.
