The Russian government temporarily suspended operations at seven key railway border checkpoints along its frontiers with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia on Wednesday. The sudden executive decree, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, completely halts the movement of all passengers, vehicles, goods, and cargo across these transit corridors effective July 1, 2026. Moscow has not disclosed the reason for the closures or specified when the checkpoints might reopen.

The enforcement heavily impacts regional infrastructure, particularly along the Finnish border where five lines—including Vyborg, Svetogorsk, and the St. Petersburg-Finlyandsky rail station—have ceased operations. This measure leaves Finland with zero functioning rail connections to Russia, severely disrupting remaining industrial logistics like fertilizer exports. Furthermore, the Pechory-Pskovskiye hub on the Estonian border and the Pytalovo crossing bordering Latvia were completely shut down.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has been instructed to officially notify Helsinki, Tallinn, and Riga of the mandates. While Finland’s land borders had already been largely closed by domestic authorities following a prior surge in asylum seekers, this latest unilateral move by the Kremlin entirely freezes the remaining active Baltic rail routes.
