Palestinian movement Hamas announced on Monday the official dissolution of the administrative body that has governed the Gaza Strip for nearly two decades, clearing the path for an independent technocratic committee to assume civilian rule. The major political shift marks the end of Hamas’s direct, day-to-day administrative control over the enclave, which it has maintained since seizing power from the rival Fatah faction in 2007.

Mohammed al-Farra, the chairman of Gaza’s governmental emergency committee, formally submitted his resignation and dismantled the administrative group to facilitate a smooth transfer of power. According to Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem, the strategic withdrawal from direct governance aims to “remove any pretexts for the occupation” and prioritize the long-term stabilization of the territory, AFP reported. Hamas leadership confirmed it has already briefed other Palestinian political factions during recent meetings in Cairo, who welcomed the step as a critical development for the region’s future.

The administrative handover fulfills a pivotal component of the 20-point Gaza peace framework brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump following the October 2025 ceasefire agreement. Responsibilities are slated to transition directly to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a technocratic entity led by Palestinian official Ali Shaath. While international observers note that the transition remains partially symbolic until complex issues like the complete disarmament of Hamas are finalized, Gaza’s media office affirmed that all existing civil servants and public employees are fully prepared to continue municipal services under the NCAG’s newly established civilian authority.
