India and Australia signed a milestone administrative arrangement on Thursday to facilitate the long-term export of Australian uranium to India. The pact, finalized during a high-profile bilateral leaders’ summit in Melbourne, clears decades of regulatory and diplomatic hurdles to help New Delhi aggressively expand its civil nuclear energy sector. The arrangement effectively activates the commercial supply chains envisioned under the 2015 Australia-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, which had previously stalled due to strict administrative roadblocks.

The steady supply of Australian uranium will directly support India’s ambitious long-term transition to clean energy, specifically its target of expanding domestic nuclear power capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2047. According to a joint statement issued by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, all uranium exported to India will be reserved exclusively for peaceful purposes and will remain strictly subject to safeguards established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Australia holds nearly 30% of the world’s known uranium reserves but historically barred sales to India because New Delhi is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The signing of this administrative framework signals a major shift in Canberra’s export policy, prioritizing India’s massive energy demands and solidifying commercial trust between the two nations. Beyond the nuclear energy breakthrough, Modi and Albanese leveraged the summit to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, unveiling a joint declaration focused on reinforcing maritime security, cyber collaboration, and critical mineral supply chains in the Indo-Pacific.
