Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer best known for the 1980s power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at the age of 75, her family announced Thursday.
Tyler died in hospital in Portugal after an illness for which she had been receiving treatment, according to a statement posted by her family on Facebook.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, Wales, Tyler became one of the most recognisable voices of the 1980s, known for her husky vocals, dramatic ballads and rock-influenced style.
Her major hits included “It’s a Heartache,” “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.” “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written by Jim Steinman, became her signature song and remains one of the most famous power ballads of the era.
Tyler had recently cancelled European tour dates planned to mark the 50th anniversary of “Lost in France,” her 1976 breakthrough hit.
