TikTok is testing a new tool that gives creators a way to search for AI-generated videos that may be using their face without permission, adding another layer to the fight over deepfakes on social platforms.

The opt-in feature is being tested first with some US creators, TikTok US spokesperson Zachary Kizer said. The tool scans for AI likenesses and lets creators review what TikTok finds before reporting suspected unauthorized posts or accounts.

Before creators can use the scanner, they must verify their identity through Jumio. The process includes a real-time selfie scan and an ID check, putting TikTok in the middle of two sensitive questions at once: how to detect AI copies, and how much biometric data platforms should handle while doing it.

Kizer said the company is limiting how that data is used. “TikTok does not retain ID documents, and facial information is used only for likeness matching and to help identify potential unauthorized uses of a creator’s likeness,” he said.

The test arrives as creators face a faster spread of AI-made impersonations, from fake endorsements to sexualized or misleading clips. For TikTok, the feature gives high-visibility users a reporting path inside the app rather than leaving them to search manually and file complaints one post at a time.

YouTube has been working on a similar system and recently made its own likeness-detection tool available to all adult users. TikTok’s version remains limited for now, with creators in the test deciding whether to turn it on and what flagged content to report.

The first question is not whether platforms can find every fake. It is whether creators trust them enough to scan for one.
