Spain’s World Cup celebrations turned deadly in Ciudad Rodrigo, where a 13-year-old boy died after a fountain collapsed as supporters gathered to celebrate the national team’s victory over Argentina.
The accident happened at the Árbol Gordo fountain in the city of Salamanca, where fans had climbed onto the structure after Spain won the final. The upper part of the fountain gave way and fell onto several people.
Emergency services said the boy was taken to a health centre in Ciudad Rodrigo, where he later died. Three other people were seriously injured, according to European media reports.
The area has been cordoned off while authorities investigate the circumstances of the collapse.
The tragedy is the latest fatal incident linked to celebrations during this World Cup. Earlier in the tournament, four people died during mass celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico advanced to the knockout stage, while a 17-year-old girl died in northern France after falling from the back of a lorry during celebrations following France’s win over Morocco.
Spain won the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina 1-0 after extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal.
