The sudden resignation of Alexandru Munteanu has triggered the automatic dissolution of Moldova’s government following an unexpected announcement on Friday. The abrupt political departure poses an immediate legislative challenge to President Maia Sandu and her ruling pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS). Munteanu stated that he chose to step down after realizing he could no longer fulfill his leadership mandate in accordance with his core principles and convictions.

Following this decision, President Sandu must initiate formal consultations with various parliamentary factions before nominating a prime ministerial successor. Alexandru Munteanu originally assumed office after the September 2025 parliamentary elections, where the PAS decisively defeated a pro-Russian rival party to accelerate the country’s integration into the European Union. Prior to his political appointment, the 62-year-old economist spent two decades working abroad in high-profile financial institutions, including the World Bank.

Despite the sudden collapse of his cabinet, the outgoing official emphasized his long-term commitment to the state, adding that he will continue to serve his country from any future position. Parliament will begin reviewing subsequent leadership nominations next week to form a stable administration.
