The European Union’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced on Thursday that she will formally propose a fresh wave of sanctions targeting corporate entities and manufacturers supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex. The decision comes in immediate response to a massive overnight Russian missile and drone barrage against Kyiv that local authorities described as the largest aerial assault on the capital since the war began.

The devastating overnight attack involved a combined force of 74 missiles and 496 drones, killing at least 17 people and injuring nearly 90 others while tearing open central residential buildings, an ambulance station, and a research institute. Writing on social media, Kallas emphasized that words of condemnation are no longer sufficient to deter Moscow’s aggression.

The proposed sanctions seek to expand upon the EU’s recently drafted restrictive frameworks, focusing heavily on disrupting supply chains for military hardware, specialized alloys, and drone components. The diplomatic push coincides with the EU beginning disbursements this week of a €6 billion tranche out of a broader €90 billion support loan designed to bolster Kyiv’s air defense systems and domestic manufacturing capabilities.
