Frances Tiafoe turned an all-American final into the biggest win of his career on Sunday, beating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 to take the Terra Wortmann Open title in Halle.

The 28-year-old became the first American man to win the grass-court ATP 500 event, which dates to 1993. It was also Tiafoe’s first tour-level title above ATP 250 level after four previous defeats in finals at bigger events.

The result changes the picture for Tiafoe before Wimbledon. He arrived in Germany after a painful five-hour, 26-minute fourth-round loss to Matteo Arnaldi at Roland Garros, then backed up a Stuttgart quarter-final run with a title week in Halle.

Tiafoe’s serve carried the day. He dropped only seven points on serve in the final and broke Fritz once in each set, first for a 4-3 lead in the opener and then immediately at the start of the second.

He also beat three Top-10 players during the week, taking out Flavio Cobolli, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Fritz on his way to the trophy. The pressure is now on the rest of the grass-court field to respond.

“I’ve lost a lot of 500 finals. I’ve lost a lot of finals in my career,” Tiafoe said. “This is big.”

The win was just Tiafoe’s second in nine tour meetings with Fritz, who had beaten him in the 2022 Tokyo final. Tiafoe is set to return to the Top 20 on Monday, rising nine places to No. 19.

“A couple of weeks ago, I had one of the toughest losses of my career at the French Open,” Tiafoe said. “To come back and have a good week in Stuttgart and win here for my biggest title, beating the players I did, it’s a huge testimony.”
