Jürgen Klopp has reached an agreement in principle to become the new head coach of the Germany men’s national team, signaling a blockbuster return to the dugout for the iconic manager. The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Saturday that intensive, high-level talks in New York between Klopp, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke successfully yielded an understanding on the essential key points of a contract. The deal is expected to run through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, though the appointment remains subject to a formal exit agreement with Klopp’s current employer, the Red Bull Group.

The highly anticipated corporate and sporting overhaul comes as a direct response to Germany’s agonizing round-of-32 exit at the 2026 World Cup, where the four-time world champions suffered a stunning penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay. The tournament failure prompted the immediate resignation of manager Julian Nagelsmann on July 3, leaving the national setup in desperate need of an elite cultural savior. Klopp, who has spent the last two years away from the touchline since concluding his legendary nine-year tenure at Liverpool, quickly emerged as the unanimous favorite after admitting he was fully “recharged” and prepared for an international challenge.

While final contractual details and multi-club release parameters are being ironed out over the coming week, Klopp is reportedly being granted sweeping authority to revitalize Germany’s entire footballing identity, from youth development tracks to senior tactical philosophy. Currently working as a television pundit in North America during the latter stages of the World Cup, the 59-year-old’s first official test on the sidelines will arrive in September. He will take charge of Die Mannschaft’s 2026–27 UEFA Nations League campaign in a tough Group A2 environment alongside the Netherlands, Greece, and Serbia.
