Madonna has turned a nostalgia play into a fresh chart win, with her new album Confessions II landing at No. 1 in the U.S. and U.K. and giving fans another summer on the dance floor.
The album follows her 2005 release Confessions On A Dance Floor, a record that has long held a special place among fans who see it as one of her defining club-pop eras.
Madonna responded to the reaction on Instagram, saying she was grateful for the reception and still processing the scale of it. She wrote that she was “still pinching myself” after seeing the album hit the top spot around the world.
The singer said her goal was simple: to “make people dance this summer.” For longtime fans, that line landed neatly with the sound and branding of the new project, which reaches back to her dance-music roots while placing her back in the middle of the pop conversation.
Confessions II is Madonna’s 15th studio album and arrived with help from Sabrina Carpenter on the lead single, Bring Your Love. The two artists debuted the track at Coachella earlier this year, when Madonna joined Carpenter during the younger star’s headline set.
The chart news gives Madonna her first U.K. No. 1 album since MDNA in 2012. One track from the album, Danceteria, also gave her a solo top 40 moment after more than a decade away from that part of the chart.
For an artist whose old songs are already finding new audiences online, the new album adds something different: a current-era hit, not just a viral memory.
