Security forces in Mexico have launched a large-scale operation to locate those responsible for the killing of a mayor in the Mixtec region, according to official sources.
Local authorities confirmed that the mayor died following an armed attack, and the case has been classified as a high-profile criminal offense. The state prosecutor’s office said an official investigation has been opened, with forensic teams and state investigators deployed to the scene to collect evidence.
The investigation is being coordinated with federal security services, while no details have yet been released regarding possible suspects or the motive.
This is the second killing of a mayor in the state of Oaxaca in the past month. Previously, Santiago Amoltepec mayor Mario Hernández García was killed in an attack that also left two other people dead.
Authorities have not yet announced an official motive for the killing of Bravo Martínez, who was a member of an opposition coalition, including the National Action Party (PAN).
Violence against local politicians remains a serious issue in parts of Mexico, particularly in regions where organized criminal groups have strong influence in rural areas.
According to data from the NGO “Causa en Común,” at least 60 politicians and lawmakers were killed in targeted attacks last year, further highlighting the country’s ongoing security crisis.
