FIFA President Gianni Infantino has secured formal letters of endorsement from more than 200 of the organization’s 211 member associations, putting him on track for a landslide re-election to a fourth term this coming March despite a wave of international backlash over a recent World Cup scandal. The overwhelming support leaves Infantino as the sole declared candidate ahead of the November 18 nomination deadline, rendering his extension of power virtually guaranteed unless an unprecedented political shift occurs. This unified display of institutional backing comes in spite of widespread unrest surrounding United States striker Folarin Balogun, whose World Cup red-card suspension was controversially quashed following direct, personal lobbying from U.S. President Donald Trump.

While European governing body UEFA has voiced sharp opposition over the handling of the Balogun reprieve and the recent exclusion of Somali referee Omar Artan, the continent’s opposition remains deeply fragmented. The English Football Association is among the vast majority of European federations that pledged their support well in advance, leaving Germany as the highest-profile nation currently holding out on official backing. The impending re-election has also faced quiet internal criticism, with several national associations alleging they faced persistent and aggressive lobbying from within FIFA to confirm their allegiance—a practice that technically violates the governing body’s own ethics code. Nevertheless, as member associations convene in New York, Infantino remains firmly in control of global soccer’s governance, anchored by the tournament’s lucrative financial performance.
